It would seem that Devon is one of the very first places in which people were settling down after the ice age and Dartmoor came to be home to hunters around the year 6000 BC, a very long time ago indeed. Once this was over the Romans came in and held the area for over 250 years and once this happened a frontier absorbed it and Wessex took over in the 9th century. on top of all of this it has taken part in so many civil wars that have occurred in England.
